Roaches are probably the most unwelcome household pest most of us can think of. They are a health hazard, easily spreading disease such as E.coli, salmonella, and dysentery.

Roaches can enter your home via cracks in doors and around windows, gaps in siding, through drains, and in cardboard boxes or paper bags. The first sign of a possible roach infestation is usually their droppings, which look like coffee grounds or black pepper. Some species’ droppings look like very small smears on the wall.

It’s important to call a roach control expert in the Coachella Valley as soon as you know you have an infestation.

Physical description

While there are many different species of roach, American roaches and German roaches are the two types most commonly found in the Coachella Valley.

American roaches are slightly longer than two inches, and reddish-brown in color with a yellow stripe or “halo” on the back of their head. German roaches are half an inch long, and pale brown in color with two black stripes on their back. German roaches are the most common type of roach in the world.

Habitat

Roaches are very adaptable and can live in many different conditions. American roaches prefer wet, dark, and warm places such as sewers and pipes. German roaches like to live in kitchens and bathrooms, where they can lay over 300 eggs per year.

Life cycle

Depending on the species, a roach can live from between 6-15 months. Roach eggs are laid in clusters of about 10-50, and look like small leathery capsules. They can be laid in bathrooms, cupboards, under appliances, and even on walls and ceilings. Typically, roaches hatch in one or two months, and high heat speeds this process along.

Once they hatch, the nymphal stage begins, and lasts for one to three months. In this stage, they have soft white bodies that gradually darken as they discard their skins several times. These discarded skins are a common sign that a roach infestation has taken hold in your home.

Interaction with humans

Roaches tend to be more active at night, and quickly make their escape if they’ve been discovered. While it’s rare, some roaches do bite humans. These bites appear as red raised bumps on the skin. Roaches also pose serious health risks through their droppings and spreading of disease.

Potential dangers or risks

Roaches can live for weeks without food or water. However, they are scavengers and will eat anything, including decaying organic material, hair, leather, books fabric, and toothpaste. They’re primarily drawn to starchy or sweet food.

Most importantly, roaches are a health hazard, releasing allergens and flaring up asthma symptoms. They also spread disease such as E.coli, salmonella, and dysentery. The chemicals in their feces and their pheromones can easily transmit bacteria, and they can carry disease on their bodies.

If you see one roach, it’s a strong possibility that you have an infestation. The quickest and most reliable way to deal with roaches is to call professional roach exterminators. Rudy’s Termite & Pest Control are experts in getting rid of roaches in the Coachella Valley – call us today.
