Rattlesnake Season Is Here, and the Coachella Valley Needs to Pay Attention

Rattlesnake

If you have lived in the Coachella Valley for any length of time, you already know August comes with more than just heat. It is also one of the most active months for rattlesnakes. As temperatures stay high well into the evening, snakes shift their schedules to avoid the harshest sun, which means they are often most active at dawn, dusk, and during cooler nighttime hours. Unfortunately, that overlaps with exactly when a lot of us are outside watering plants, letting the dog out, or walking after the sun goes down.

Rattlesnakes are not trying to invade your home the way ants or roaches are. They are simply following food. Rodents, birds, and other small animals are their main diet, and if your property has any of these visiting regularly, you have unintentionally set out a welcome mat. Woodpiles, thick brush, rock landscaping, and cluttered storage areas are prime hiding spots. Even a garage door left open a few extra minutes can become an entry point.

The desert landscaping so many of us love, with its rock beds and native plants, can unfortunately give snakes plenty of cover. That does not mean you need to rip out your yard, but it does mean being smart about maintenance. Trim back overgrown shrubs, keep woodpiles elevated and away from the house, and seal up gaps under fences, decks, and sheds where a snake could slip through.

If you do come across a rattlesnake, the most important thing is to stay calm and give it space. Do not try to move it, trap it, or corner it. Most snake bites happen when people try to handle or kill the snake themselves. Keep kids and pets back, and let it move along on its own if possible. If it has taken up residence somewhere close to your home, like under a porch or near an entryway, that is when it makes sense to call in professionals who know how to handle removal safely.

This is really where pest control connects directly to snake activity, even though people do not always think of it that way. Rattlesnakes stick around properties that have a steady rodent population. When we treat your property for rodents, we are removing the very thing drawing snakes in. It is one of the most effective long term ways to reduce snake encounters, because you are cutting off the food source instead of just reacting to sightings.

August is also a good time to do a walk around your property with fresh eyes. Look at ground level entry points, storage areas, and anywhere debris has piled up over the summer. Small changes now can make a real difference in how often you run into unwanted wildlife for the rest of the season.

Rattlesnakes are simply part of living in this beautiful desert, and a little awareness goes a long way.
