August nights in the Coachella Valley bring a very specific kind of visitor out of hiding: scorpions. While they are around all year, late summer is when we see the biggest spike in activity and in calls from homeowners finding them inside. There are a few reasons this time of year is such a hot spot, no pun intended.
Scorpions are nocturnal and they thrive in warm temperatures, which makes our summer nights close to ideal conditions for them. During the day they tuck themselves into cool, shaded spots like under rocks, inside woodpiles, or in cracks in your foundation. Once the sun goes down and temperatures start to drop slightly, they come out to hunt. That hunting often leads them closer to homes, especially if there is an easy meal waiting in the form of other insects drawn to your porch lights.
One of the more surprising things about scorpions is how easily they can squeeze through impossibly small gaps. A crack around a window frame, a gap under a door, or a spot where a pipe enters the house is all it takes. Once inside, they gravitate toward dark, quiet places like closets, shoes left on the floor, and even bedding, which is exactly why so many scorpion encounters happen inside the home rather than outside.
A trick a lot of pest professionals use, and one homeowners can try too, is a blacklight flashlight. Scorpions glow a greenish blue under UV light, making them much easier to spot at night in yards, garages, and patios. If you want to get a sense of how much scorpion activity is actually happening around your property, a quick blacklight walk after dark can be eye opening.
Prevention comes down to a few consistent habits. Keep firewood and debris piles away from the exterior walls of your home. Seal cracks around windows, doors, and utility entry points. Shake out shoes and check bedding if you live in an area with known scorpion activity. Outdoor lighting also plays a role, since bright lights attract the insects scorpions feed on, which in turn draws scorpions closer to your home.
While most scorpion stings in our region cause pain and swelling rather than serious medical emergencies, encounters are still unpleasant and can be more dangerous for young kids, older adults, or anyone with sensitivities. If you are noticing scorpions more frequently, especially inside, that is usually a sign of a bigger population nearby rather than a one time fluke.
