Most of us have encountered flies in our homes, whether they come in through an open window or on fruit. Whether it’s a housefly or a fruit fly, they’re more than just an annoying houseguest – they can easily spread disease and contamination in your home. Some flies can live for months or even years, so let Rudy’s Termite & Pest Control help. We can determine what type of fly is in your home, and how to effectively treat it.

Physical description

There are two types of fruit flies common to the Coachella Valley: the red-eyed species, and the dark-eyed species. Though the dark-eyed fruit fly is larger than the red-eyed species, they’re both approximately 1/8th – 1/6th of an inch in length. Their bodies are tan in color in the front, and black in color in the rear.

Common in the Coachella Valley, houseflies are 1/4 of an inch in length and gray in color. You may be able to see a few dark stripes on its body.

Habitat

Not only found in fruit, some fruit flies can live and breed underneath tiles and inside drains. Flies prefer to live where it’s warm and where food sources are plentiful. Because flies are attracted to decaying organic material such as rotting food, they are a particular problem in homes and restaurants. Flies are also a nuisance in your home’s outdoor space when they nest and breed in your property’s shrubs, bushes, and grass.

Life cycle

House flies in the Coachella Valley usually live for about a month and don’t travel far from where they live. Female flies can lay eggs almost anywhere that’s warm and a source of food – this can include rotting food, carrion, garbage, and feces. Once eggs are laid, a fly can hatch within eight to 20 hours.

Maggots are fly larvae. They are cream-colored, approximately ¼-3/8 of an inch long, and wormlike. After eating and shedding their exoskeletons three times, they enter the pupal stage. In this stage, the fly pupae will build a cocoon around itself in a dry location. Here, they grow their wings, legs, and antennae and emerge from their cocoon once they are fully-grown adults. From this point, a female fly can begin to lay eggs at around the 12th day, and can lay over 500 eggs throughout its life.

Interaction with humans

Because flies eat garbage and rotten meat, they can easily spread contamination through your home. Flies can carry diseases such as cholera, dysentery, salmonella, E. coli, tuberculosis, and typhoid.

Peak fly season in the Coachella Valley happens between May and October, and ongoing treatment may be needed to ensure your home and property are rid of these pests.

Potential dangers or risks

Houseflies feed by ejecting their saliva onto food in order to liquify it and suck it up. This process leaves behind dangerous bacteria. Houseflies also walk across feces and decaying meat and garbage, which transfers dangerous bacteria to everything they walk across afterwards. Houseflies can lay hundreds of eggs over a period of a few days, so it’s essential to deal with them right away.
