Are you concerned you might have bed bugs? Here’s how to identify bed bugs, and where they come from.
Bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, flat, and reddish-brown in color. They feed on blood, and become swollen after eating. If you see small reddish-brown spots on furniture or sheets, see tiny holes in your wall, or notice a group of swollen, red, itchy spots on your skin, you may have a bed bug infestation. Large groups of bed bugs also give off a somewhat sweet odor.
If you discover a bed bug infestation, it’s important to keep it from spreading. Don’t move bedding or furniture out of that room, and close it off if possible, before calling pest control experts.
Despite their name, bed bugs can hide in other places besides your bed. Because of their small size, they can infest mattresses, furniture, carpets, closets, clothing, and even squeeze into the cracks in your floors or behind wallpaper. Bed bug eggs are around 1/32 – 1/8 of an inch in size, and are usually found in dark crevices. Bed bugs enter your home through beds, furniture, clothing, and luggage.
Bed bugs can also travel throughout your home very quickly. They can spread if their favorite hiding spots have been disturbed or moved, such as moving furniture to a different room. The loss of a food source host can also cause bed bugs to go in search of a new one.
You can prevent a bed bug infestation in a few ways. Ensure that used furniture is thoroughly examined before bringing it home. Bed bugs are common on used mattresses and bedding, so we advise you don’t bring them into your home. Coachella Valley bed bugs are prevalent due to travel. You can prevent bed bugs by examining your hotel’s bedding, mattress, and box spring while traveling, and vacuuming your luggage and doing laundry as soon as you return home.
Do you think you have bed bugs in your home? Contacting pest control professionals right away is key, because bed bugs can multiply quickly, laying up to five eggs per day. They’re more difficult to get rid of than other household pests, so DIY bed bug removal isn’t advised.
