Termite Fumigation in the Coachella Valley

How Does a Termite Fumigation Work?

Termite fumigation, also known as termite tenting, refers to the process of placing heavy nylon tarps (or a “tent”) over a home to form an airtight seal, and then releasing a fumigant inside. This fumigant spreads through the home, reaching termites in the cracks and crevices of wood. When the termites inhale the fumigant gas, they die. Afterwards, the tent is removed and the fumigant quickly disperses into the atmosphere. The entire process takes approximately three days, and during that time, the house is secured by the fumigators so no unauthorized people can get in.

Our highly-trained fumigators monitor gas concentrations during the treatment. Afterwards, they will test the air quality throughout the entire house, based on standards set up by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The fumigation process does not leave any sort of residue behind after treatment.

In the Coachella Valley, termite fumigation is typically recommended for severe drywood termite infestations involving a whole house. Drywood termites live inside wood, making other treatment methods ineffective. However, one alternative to fumigation is heat treatment, used for less extensive termite infestations. Fumigation can also be an effective treatment for extensive cockroach and bed bug infestations.

The state of California has certain termite fumigation regulations in place. All fumigators must be registered by the Structural Pest Control Board, and may need to inform local the local fire department before performing a fumigation. Additionally, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation registers all fumigants and oversees their use. Fumigators must also arrange for gas to be shut off by the utility for the duration of the fumigation.

How to Prepare For a Termite Fumigation

Before your Coachella Valley termite fumigation treatment, here are some steps you can take to prepare:

– Ensure you and any pets have alternate accommodation for the entire length of treatment, as you will not be allowed into the home for your safety.

– To help the fumigant pass through your home, open all interior doors as well as doors to closets, cupboards, drawers, and appliances.

– Seal food items, medicine, dental products, pet food, and tobacco in special food storage bags provided by your fumigators.

– Remove any indoor plants or outdoor clutter that may obstruct the fumigation tarp.

– Leave keys for the fumigators, for every area of the house.
